The benefit concert for ANFASEP on December 29th was a huge success. Despite the freezing cold December weather, we enjoyed a great turnout of 100+ people and a wonderful atmosphere of support and thoughtfulness. All proceeds from the show are going directly to ANFASEP to support their advocacy work. Most of all, we’re excited to have raised awareness of the political situation in Peru, and of the work of ANFASEP in seeking reparations and rebuilding the indigenous community of Ayacucho. This will be the first of many!

We seek to empower the National Association of the Kidnapped, Detained and Disappeared of Peru (ANFASEP).

ANFASEP works to attain justice in human rights in the community of Ayacucho, Peru, following twenty years of violence that began in 1980, leaving approximately 68,000 dead. ANFASEP’s mission evokes the revitalization of the indigenous community that suffered the consequences of constant terror and brutal internal warfare.

Founded with the hope of recovering the disappeared, ANFASEP functions not only as a form of collective grieving and support, but also as a force of advocacy for victim’s rights.

In specific, donations will directly support:

-Operations costs for the Museum of Memory located in Ayacucho, Perú.

-Funding for the salary of a trained guide for the Museum of Memory, a major source of community advocacy and mobilization in the indigenous community.

-The costs of mural repairs on the exterior of the Museum, a source of visibility and a means of remembrance.

-Alleviation of travel expenses for ANFASAP members´ outreach and advocacy trips to provincial bases in outlying areas of Ayacucho, as well as to the capital, Lima.

In response to the violence, the National Association of the Kidnapped, Detained and Disappeared of Peru (ANFASEP) was founded on September 2, 1983 by a group of displaced women of rural Ayacucho, mostly quichua-speakers and illiterate who had recently lost family members. ANFASEP works to attain justice in human rights in the community of Ayacucho, Peru following twenty years of violence that began in 1980, leaving approximately 68,000 dead.

ANFASEP’s mission evokes the revitalization of the indigenous community that suffered the consequences of constant terror and brutal internal warfare. Founded with the hope of recovering the disappeared, ANFASEP functions not only as a form of collective grieving and support, but also as a force of advocacy for victim’s rights.

As a grassroots organization, ANFASEP survives on income from its artisan shop with traditional crafts created by its members. Income is also generated by admission to the Museum of Memory in Ayacucho, which exhibits extensive documentation of the atrocities, displaying personal artifacts and testimonies from the victims.

All proceeds go directly to ANFASEP so that it may continue to function as a crucial voice for victims’ rights. Increased visibility and improved organization capacities will secure ANFASEP’s place as a fundamental mobilizer and a much-needed source of communal therapy for victims. The victims’ testimonies must be communicated so that the Peruvian government is held accountable for atrocities committed in this period of violence.

Objectives of the organization :

-Government recognition of the report published by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to officially establish documentation free of political interests that would excuse obligations to protect basic human rights.

-Allocation of monetary reparations from the government to reimburse victims for damaged and destroyed property during the years of violence.

-Establishment of ANFASEP as a sustainable base for collective grieving and revitalization of the indigenous community.

History of the Conflict in Peru

Between the years of 1980 and 2000, the people of Peru lived through an internal war. Those that suffered most were of the rural and poor sectors of society: farmers and quichua-speakers of the indigenous community. Responsible for beginning the wave of violence was the Communist Party of Peru, Sendero Luminoso, which used terror tactics in its attempts to establish a “New Democracy.” The state contributed significantly to the violence by excessive utilization of the Armed Forces, National Police, and Defense Committee. These forces violated the human rights of thousands of families, who suffered forced disappearances, sexual violations, and executions.

According to the Commission of Truth and Reconciliation of Peru, the number of deaths of during this period amounted to approximately 68,000 dead. Following the violence, Peru witnessed thousands become orphans and widows, and thousands more displaced from their rural lands of origin to cities, disrupting the entire social structure once based on a patriarchal system with earnings gained from subsistence farming.

Ayacucho, located in the Huamanga province in the Andes mountain region, was the site of the initiation of the violence, and also the most punished by the onslaught. The founder of the Sendero Lumioso uprising, Abimael Guzman, worked as a philosophy professor at the San Cristobal of Huamanga University in Ayacucho, where he established the clandestine organization. According to the Commission of Truth and Reconciliation of Peru, 40% of victims originated from Ayacucho.
